— USAGE GUIDLINES —
On boats, the FRONT or BOW shade is designed for sandbar use only (i.e. when boat is stationary). If you’re going to move the boat with this front shade up, the boat should not move faster than 5 – 7 knots with the poles up. The AFT shade can be up whife the boat is moving, but we do not recommend leaving it up if the boat is moving faster than 10 knots. There should ALWAYS be a strap in place attached from the padeye to a cleat/padeye on the boat: the purpose of this is to create equal pressure to the front and back of the pole, so that the pole doesn’t flex or break under speed/wind pressure. The strap can be a one inch webbing strap attached with a snap hook, or rigging wire, or even simple marine line – as long as it is very strong and durable. Regardless of whether this strap is installed, we do NOT recommend moving the boat faster than 15 knots MAXIMUM with the shade/poles up. THE SUPPORT STRAP MUST BE INSTALLED ON ALL POLES, INCLUDING HOME/PATIO/SAILSHADE/AWNING POLES. Warranty is voided if there is no support stap in place. All poles come with padeye/footmans loop riveted on the top of the pole, opposite the pulley – this is where the strap MUST be attached. The stap must also be used for home shade (sailshade, awning etc.) to prevent the base from coming loose when poles under load. IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED TO KEEP YOUR RESIDENTIAL SHADE AND POLES UP IN WINDS IN EXCESS OF 39 MILES PER HOUR – IN SUCH EVENTS, SHADES SHOULD BE TAKEN DOWN.

FAQ
Commonly asked questions regarding Carbiepoles
Can I use my Carbiepoles while underway?
Although it is not recommended, shades can remain in deployed when traveling at low speed, with wind speed never exceeding 15 knots, as long as the Support Strap is tightly in place.
Can I leave my shade up during a storm?
Carbiepoles can be damaged during heavy winds. If, at any time, you suspect heavy wind gusts, we recommend stowing the poles and awning.
How do I care for my Carbiepoles?
Always make sure your support strap is installed when using the poles for shade. Failure to use the support straps voids all warranties. Secondly, always rinse the poles off with fresh water after exposure to salt water and dry them (soft polishing cloth). DO NOT ALLOW THE POLES TO BECOME EXCESSIVELY HOT, AS EXTREME TEMPERATURES CAN CAUSE THE POLES TO BOW OR WARP. This means really extreme temperatures though, not just normal day to day exposure to sunlight. Remember too that dark colored objects absorb heat more than light colors, so black poles will become much hotter than white poles (for example). This means that after a day out in the hot sun, your poles may be warm or hot to the touch. Thirdly, like most things, with extended exposure to sunlight, Carbiepoles may fade over time, so when they’re not in use, do store them in a soft, protective bag in the shade.
The poles can be washed and polished using a good quality wax product (ex boat or car wax).
Can my Carbiepoles scratch?
Yes. Although they are finished with a durable AwlGrip painted finish, poles can become scratched or scuffed if abused. They can be repaired with a good sanding and recoat with AwlGrip.
What is a Support Strap and why do I need one?
Support straps MUST MUST MUST be installed on every single pole, whether it is on a boat, a patio, carport or garden. You can use 1 inch webbing to make the strap, and attach that with a snaphook, or else simple rigging wire or marine rope/line will suffice, as long as it is durable and very strong. Wind gusts can put a lot of stress on the poles and in tests we have carried out, adding the support strap increases the holding strength of the base by 50%. This is because the attachment point is actually the weakest point in the system. We ran several tests, and on those poles without support straps, the bases tended to pull out of the wood or concrete much quicker than when we had the straps installed and pulling the pole in the opposite direction. Please note that IF THE STRAP IS NOT INSTALLED AND THE POLES ARE IN USE, THE WARRANTY IS AUTOMATICALLY VOIDED. THESE SHADE POLES ARE NOT DESIGNED TO BE KEPT UP IN EXTREME WIND CONDITIONS I.E. WINDS OVER 39 MPH. IF YOU’RE EXPECTING EXTREMELY WINDY CONDITIONS, PLEASE TAKE YOUR SHADE DOWN.
Is there a warranty on the Carbiepole?
Carbiepoles are warranted for a period of one year from the date of sale against wear and tear. Warranty is void if the Support Strap is not properly used or if the poles are deployed in wind gusts exceeding 39 mph.
